The Albers Humanities Festival celebrates the 1920s this April with “Jazz and Gin at the Speakeasy.”
The festival will feature four events over Thursday-Friday, April 7-8 in 160 Murphy Hall on the DSU Campus.

On Thursday, Apr 7th at 4pm, you can join us for a panel on the Harlem Renaissance, Prohibition, and other 1920s topics.
At 7pm the keynote speaker, Dr. Gavin Hurley, will provide a look into the silent film, Nosferatu (1922), which was the first film version of Dracula, by discussing silent film horror in respect to modern day attitudes toward horror.
On Friday , Apr 8th at 4pm, Dr. Brian Holder will discuss the invention of the vibraphone and provide a demonstration.
The festival will wrap up at 7pm on Friday with local artist, Jessica Magnuson, who will discuss her 1920s inspired cat art. This festival is sure to be the bee’s knees!
All events are free and open to the public and can be attended remotely via Zoom. Please contact Dr. Holly McBee at holly.mcbee@dickinsonstate.edu to get a link for a specific session.

The Albers Humanities Festival celebrates work in the humanities and was named in honor of Everett C. Albers, a DSU graduate and professor.  He was the head of the North Dakota Humanities Council for 23 years and the founder of the Great Plains Chautauqua Society.  Albers was a pioneer in arranging dialogs between academic humanities scholars and the general public and was deeply committed to the idea that the humanities belong to all the people of North Dakota and the nation.

Following Albers’ death in 2004, Lillian Crook, then head of Stoxen Library, along with Clay Jenkinson, helped Dickinson State establish the Festival dedicated to the memory and professional values of Albers. The Albers Humanities Festival is held to honor Albers’ commitment to the humanities, exploring contemporary and enduring topics through events such as lectures, films, panel discussions, exhibits, and other presentations.
